Aug 16/17 - Day 52/53 - Abiquiu

El Rito, NM to Abiquiu, NM

Distance - 14 Miles, Avg Speed 14.7 mph

The ride from El Rito and Abiquiu was short and fast. All pavement and downhill! The area really began to change in the sense of deserts cape. Even the RV’s changed from the great “bus like” RV’s to a bit more rustic…

Abiquiu is a simple town where Georgia O’Keefe had her ranch and was the inspiration for much of her work. The town is small and well, small; a post office, an Inn, a general store and a gas station. The Abiquiu Inn is a quiet and peaceful place with wonderful food. What a great place to stay and rest for a few days.

During the evening Dirtbaby manages to make contact with Bill who is now two days ahead of us. It is common place for bikers along the route to stay in touch with each other in some manner, updating each other on important closures and difficulties.

At this time I would estimate only about 20-25 bicyclists remain on the route. It is rumored about 50-60 cyclists have attempted this ride this year, excluding the 58 racers that competed earlier. If you use the race statistics for dropouts, less than half of the cyclists will complete the ride.
