June 27, Day 2

The day started at 7:20am with fresh coffee brewed on the jet boil coffee press. The jet boil is a fantastic device – everyone should have one in the camping/earthquake kit! Boils a pint of water in less than 2 minutes. We had breakfast with the deer, who were willing us to leave them some tidbits. They seemed to have no fear of humans, not a good move in a state where the number one outdoor activity is hunting.

We had a glorious downhill for about 3 miles punctuated by our first flat. Dirtbaby’s bike, Sherman took one for the team, with a split tire which meant not only the tube had to be replaced but we also had to figure out a patch job for the tire. Fortunately, this fix seems to have held, and we are hoping this holds until
we visit the Whitefish bike shop ( yet again!) tomorrow.

We cycled through some incredible scenery including an area which was badly hit by forest fires, but which seems to be regenerating itself quite quickly. Still no sign of bears, just a teeny gopher snake. Today was a short day because we decided to detour 5.5 miles off route to a bakery, Polebridge Mercantile which we had been told just had to be the best bakery in the world. When cinnamon rolls were mentioned, Dirtbaby insisted on the detour. Great decision as the bakery had some of the best baked goods we have ever seen, including not only plain cinnamon rolls, but apple cinnamon rolls, huckleberry cinnamon rolls and walnut and frosting cinnamon rolls. They also bake their own specialty breads, such as spinach & blue cheese twisted in French bread dough. As we arrived here at 1.30, we seem to have visited the bakery at least 6 times so far, for purchases such as microbrew beers, cookies, wine, spaghetti sauce, oh and a single tampon, what a lifesaver!

We have got us a little cabin which has no electricity, no running water, actually it is really a shed with a couple of beds in, but it will do, as it will save us packing the tent tomorrow and filtering water. The nearest toilet is a real stinker though, the smell of ammonia stings your eyes as you open the door. Curiously, there is a pile of reading magazines provided, like as if! Luckily there is a more fragrant toilet a bit further away.

This 5.5 mile diversion will cost us dearly tomorrow, as it is a steep climb back up to where we turned off, plus there is another 10 mile gradual climb up to Red Meadow. The elevation profile also shows some small blips which appear to be vertical – surely a mistake? In total we will climb from 3,600 to just over 5,500 ft. At least the bakery opens at 7am so we can stock up with some more cinnamon rolls for the journey.

June 26, 2010 - Day 1

June 26, 2010 - Day 1
The day began at 4:30am with a shuttle ride from Whitefish to Roosville on the US/Canadian border. Yes, a shuttle, as we knew we would not make it to the campsite without killing ourselves. At 7am we crossed into Canada, only to snap a photo, have our passports stamped and turn right back again into the US to begin our ride. We were blessed with glorious sunshine and blue skies. A perfect start!

10 miles across the border we had a great breakfast in Eureka with a grand stack of blueberry pancakes.

The ride was mostly on paved country roads until we hit the beginning of the Whitefish Divide pass, which was a forest gravel road.

This divide brought us from approximately 2,500ft to just over 5,200ft. We were quite tired but made it to our camp site, Tuchuck campground.

We thought we would have at least a few hunters or backwoods campers, but not a person in sight, just us and a few curious mule deer.

The area we cycled through on day one has the largest concentration of Grizzly and Black Bears in the continental US. We are each carrying bear repellent spray but have been fortunate not to have used it! We did not see any bears however, just some hairy bear poo on the road, although we did hear a bear cub crying for momma in the woods.

The campsite was a basic forestry service campground, just a pit toilet, a picnic table and a fire grate. Plenty of water was available in the nearby creek, to make our first dinner of dehydrated macaroni and cheese. This, along with cous cous was pretty tasty and hit the spot – we were just missing some nice cold beer to wash it down.

The trees in the campground were all Lodgepole pine, which have no suitable large branches on which to hang food from and hence, away from the bears. Since we were alone in the campground, we decided to investigate the possibility of storing all our food and scented items overnight o in the pit toilet. Fortunately, the Tuchuck pit toilet just has to be one of the cleanest and non-smelly toilets in the whole of the US! This seemed to work well, as we were not visited by any bears during the night, although a little critter did nibble through the bottom of the garbage bag.

June 26 - Our Great Divide Ride Starts!

We will be up at 5am tomorrow to catch a cab that will take us to Roosville, Mt where we start our ride. After about 10 miles into our ride, we plan on eating a nice breakfast in Eureka before facing our next 35 miles or so which will take us up 2,000 feet in elevation as we leave the Kootenai Natl Forest and enter Flathead Natl Forest. We'll be camping for two days before returning to Whitefish. We were told that "the best bakery in the world" is in Polebridge, MT. That would be a slight detour for us on day 2, just at the outside of Glacier Natl Park, but we are told it is worth the effort. We're game!

We'll keep marking our GPS SPOT trackers so you all can see where we are. Wish us luck, and thanks to everyone for your support!

June 25 7:15 am

So we picked up the bikes on weds. Yesterday was our shakedown ride to get the last little kinks out and do some fine tuning. I had my shifting cables replaced, the front and rear derailer's adjusted, air in the front forks and of course air adjustment in the rear shock. Both Matt and I are riding full suspension bikes and susan is on a Thorn bike from the UK.

The weather in whitefish has been incredible. Warm balmy days and cool nights. No rain so far. But you can see the clouds gather along the great divide, so evenings are risky. The sun doesn't set until 9:15 so the days are really long. We are really close to the lake, so there is wildlife everywhere.

The Town is like Boulder Colorado or Woodside. It's a beautiful resort town with great food, microbrews a huge lake for fishing and water sports, skiing in winter and trails everywhere.

Speaking of microbrews, a woman gave us a map of all the microbrewery-locations in Montana.

Julie and Matt left this afternoon from Palm Springs Airport to Kalispell, MT. If all goes well, they will hook up with Susan in Denver on their connection flights. Susan left several hours ago on her long journey from the U.K.

Once in Kalispell, they will all make their way via cab to Whitefish where Matt rented a house by the lake to stay a few days. While in Whitefish, they will rebuild their bikes, double check their gear, and go out on a few test runs. Their plan is to start out towards Rooseville on June 26. That will be a 60 mile ride up to the border which doesn't even count as part of the route miles yet!! They plan to start their official first day of the Great Divid Route on June 27.

Oh, and also Matt informed me that Whitefish has a couple micro breweries that they will want to check out before they start their ride....go figure.

Packing up

Packed up today - front & rear panniers & tent weigh 15kg (just over 33 pounds for our US readers). Bike weighs another 15kg and I still have my front rack to fit in Whitefish. Had a slight scare this morning when I realised the bike box wasn't going to fit in the car, but at least I found that out today, not tomorrow morning just before leaving for the airport! I'm now getting a minivan to pick me up and take me to the airport.

I read in the paper this morning about a 70 year old guy being killed by a grizzly in Yellowstone..... can't decide whether that is a good or bad omen?

This is my spot tracking adventure page. It will send an update every 10 mins of where we are on the route. I am still testing how it will work in sync with our blogger page.
Julie's Great Divide Ride - Mountain biking - Spot

Thursday, 17 June 2010

First post! So bikes shipped on Monday and 111 pounds of gear shipped yesterday.... Yikes! We will work on paring down gear in Montana.

Julie and I will be leaving Palm Springs on Tuesday, June 22 and meet Susan in the Colorado airport, continuing on to Kalispell, Montana. Then a short trip to Whitefish which we will call home for four days before heading to the Canadian border and jumping onto the trial.

I am very excited and driving everyone nuts as I am ready to hit the road. It's been about 10 years since riding across America and boy do I have itchy pants!

Route

Here's the route we will be following. We will be carrying GPS spot trackers so people can see where we are (and we can't cheat!) Details of GPS IDs to be provided later.....

We start in Montana and travel through Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado and finally New Mexico, where we hope to arrive first week in September.

Preparation

Matt & Susan first met cycling across USA on the Northern Tier in May-August 2001. This trip ended with a promise to ride together again some day. The idea for the current trip germinated in Palm Springs, when Susan visited Matt in October 2009 and we talked Julie into coming along. Suddenly, all the pieces started to fall into place early 2010 and we began to look at buying bikes in February 2010. Here's our bikes!
