June 29, Day 4

Whitefish, MT to Bigfork, MT - 42 Miles - Avg Speed - 10 mph

Morning at the KOA camp with our support team...

As this was our original scheduled layover day, Jiggleless decided to take the day off with Deb & Judy (our support team) as she had an inflammed I.T. band with numbness from the side of her knee up and around her hip. The support team took a trip up to Canada via Going to the Sun Highway in Glacier National Park, and stayed in the Prince of Wales Hotel in Waterton Park. A spectacular must see location for anyone who ventures this far to the north of Montana!
As the weather forecast was good, Numb Stuff and Dirt Baby decided to press on and take advantage of the good sunny weather. We left the cosy KOA cabin at 9.30am, having behaved like a couple of locusts in the free KOA breakfast and grabbed anything that wasn’t tied down. We took a corner off the official route (that would be us disqualified from the Great Divide Race if we were in it) and cut through to Columbia Falls on Highway 40/2. After crossing the Flathead river, traffic fell off substantially and we rode along paved and gravel roads through lush farmlands.

We went through some spectacular mustard fields! This is also prime Christmas tree growing country, and one of the main commercial crops. Any closer to Christmas and we might have been tempted to throw one in the BOB trailer! Although the terrain was fairly flat, there were a few hills here and there to contend with, but there was a tough headwind which along with the 90F heat made hard riding.

Despite this, we arrived in Big Fork around 2:30pm, just in time to sample the local Flathead microbrewery beer, Grizzy Bear Ale – scrummy.
No problems getting a motel, Timbers Motel was the first one we called, just they never mentioned the 15% grade road you had to shimmy up to get there! Numb Stuff was wiped out and had to take a chillout rest, while Dirtbaby made a side trip to the local grocery store to get lunch sandwiches for the next day. Dirtbaby struggled to make herself understood at the deli counter with her British accent. Eventually, the deli guy loses patience and just hands her a piece of paper with sandwich ingredients on it and asks her to tick what exactly it is she wants! Early night, both in bed by 8.30pm. The joy of sleeping between clean white sheets and drying yourself on a fluffy white towel!
